Overview:  The opportunity to design affordable housing within a community falls to the elected town government. As an elected official, town supervisor, or board member, conducting your due diligence and understanding the opportunities provided by an affordable housing project are paramount.

“Home Rule” in New York State allows each community to decide what is best for its residents.

Talking Points

Strategies

1) Review your town’s tools. Your town has key documents that will guide your decisions regarding affordable housing:
a. Comprehensive plan
b. Zoning laws
c.  Special ordinances
2) Conduct your due diligence.
3) Share your findings through open discussions early and often.
4) Invite RUPCO to present before your town board meeting.  If your town is in the Hudson Valley region of New York, contact Guy Kempe, Vice President of Community Development, for a presentation on affordable housing.
