Kingston, NY — 2/25/2014 —Kingston native James B. Childs, M.Div.,M.A. has been elected Chairperson of the RUPCO Board of Directors for 2014 according to an announcement from the non-profit housing agency. Childs will be joined on the Executive Committee by Vice-Chairperson Catherine A. Maloney. Henry Gleich, CPA of West Hurley will continue to serve as Treasurer and Lisa Schatzel Assistant Vice President/Originations at Ulster Savings Bank, will take over as Secretary.
Childs, who serves as the pastor of The Pointe Church at the Pointe of Praise Family Life Center in Kingston, has a Masters of Divinity Degree and a Master of Arts Degree. A nationally known consultant on Diversity & Inclusion, Childs has served on the RUPCO board for the past five years. “I was hesitant to take on this responsibility because of an already loaded schedule,” said Childs of his new role. “But since I’ve been here, I’ve learned things I never thought I needed to know and have been blown away by the commitment and skill of the RUPCO staff.” Childs said he looks forward to watching RUPCO’s next big project unfold during the coming year and anticipated that the 55 new apartments in Kingston’s historic Lace Factory will become a catalyst for economic development in the city.
Maloney, who serves as the President and CEO of the Dutchess County Economic Development Corporation has won praise for her work on the county’s “4R Future” plan to reform, retain, reinvest and recruit for the business community. “Even before joining the Board I admired RUPCO’s work and impact on the community.” said Maloney. Now having been on the Board, I am impressed with the dedication, determination and concern of the staff. They really care about the people with whom they work and the communities in which they work. I am proud to be part of such an amazing organization.” Maloney, a Kingston homeowner, has served on the RUPCO board for four years.
Gleich and Schatzel are also long time RUPCO Board Members, though this is Schatzel’s first assignment to the Executive Committee. Gleich owns Henry A. Gleich CPA, PC on Pine Street in Kingston. Schtazel is Assistant Vice President/Originations of Ulster Savings Bank in Kingston. In addition to Gleich and Schatzel on the Executive Committee, other RUPCO Board members include Thomas A. Collins, Leah Gherardi, Richard Heese, Joan Lonergan, Christopher Marx, Patrick Paul, Carlos Valencia and Karen Winkle.
“RUPCO has long maintained a dynamic board of directors and a tradition of strong leadership. I am thrilled to be working with James Childs as the new Chairperson,” said Kevin O’Connor, CEO. “James’ passion, charisma and enthusiasm are inspiring to all of us on staff. I love the fact that James is challenging both himself and the agency to achieve greater heights during his tenure and I know that under his leadership, RUPCO will continue to be successful. He and our other board and executive committee members all bring great passion and skill to our mission,” O’Connor added.
Long known as RUPCO despite its lengthier former name, the housing agency officially changed its name last year and is now formally known as RUPCO, Inc. “The breadth and depth of this agency’s work has expanded dramatically during the last five years,” said O’Connor. Noting that the agency which started in Ulster County, now does work in 10 different counties, O’Connor added “this change in our name represents new work, new thinking, new areas covered. We are looking forward and are excited about the future,” said O’Connor, “and changing our name reflects that mindset.”
