November 19, 2014, Kingston, NY — The Ulster County Continuum of Care (CoC) will hold its annual meeting on Wednesday, December 3 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at The Kirkland 2 Main Street, Kingston. The meeting will include a discussion on “Overcoming Homelessness in Ulster County.” CoC membership will also vote to fill vacancies on its Board of Directors.
The Ulster County Continuum of Care represents a consortium of agencies that support the needs of homeless in Ulster County. The CoC is comprised of local government, nonprofits, homeless housing and service providers, local elected officials, veteran groups, faith-based organizations, for-profit businesses, and educational representatives who assist, advocate for, and work with the homeless in Ulster County. Each year, the group completes an annual unsheltered homeless count, updates the County’s homeless strategy, coordinates activities with agencies that serve the homeless, and submits an annual grant application to the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) that brings over $1-million dollars annually to the area through Ulster County homeless providers. Application funding is determined on an annual basis and all parties serving the homeless are eligible to apply.
“Last year, many CoC members provided input on gaps in homeless services,” explains Kathy Germain, Vice President of RUPCO’s HomeOwnership Center and CoC coordinator. “Over the past 12 months, we collected monthly homeless numbers and mapped our current homeless systems and our providers. We are currently in the process of developing a coordinated assessment that will be used by all homeless providers in determining the permanent supportive housing needs of homeless individuals and families. At this year’s meeting, we will share Ulster County’s homeless trends, which are on the rise. We’ll also highlight updates on our collective work and the upcoming homeless count. Speakers will share their stories of the effects of homelessness, outline characteristics of the homeless, and provide available community resources ready to assist those in need.”
Those interested in attending the CoC’s annual meeting should RSVP by December 1 to Joanna Mercado at email@example.com or call RUPCO at 845-331-9860, ext. 220.
