RUPCO is the region’s leading provider and advocate of quality, affordable housing and community development programs aimed to provide opportunity and revitalize communities. But until now, many people in Spanish speaking communities had to struggle to access the programs. Today, that is no longer true!

Ever mindful of celebrating the diverse populations of the communities we serve, RUPCO has worked diligently to staff the agency with people of different backgrounds, cultures and experiences. Nowhere is that more apparent than at the RUPCO “water cooler” where one is as likely to hear Spanish being spoken as to hear English. From the Housing Choice Voucher program, to the HomeOwnership Center, to the Green Jobs/Green New York program, RUPCO has engaged Spanish speakers to be sure that people who struggle with English have the same opportunities as people who don’t.

Francisca Castellanos and Joanna Mercado in the HomeOwnership Center are both fluent in Spanish. That fact has increased the number of Spanish-speaking first time homebuyers and has guaranteed that anyone calling for information will be able to make themselves understood. In the Housing Choice Voucher program, Karina Rivera helps to serve those more comfortable speaking Spanish, and in the Green Jobs/Green New York program, Hugo Jule and James Kopp focus on helping families where English is the second language. In Property Management, Flora Narrea’s smile and Spanish proficiency make RUPCO residents feel welcomed and safe and Ken Brown, Superintendent at Woodstock Commons, uses his Spanish skills to help people celebrate their cultural diversity.

With more than 14% of its staff now bi-lingual, RUPCO is prepared to help the 9.3% of Ulster County residents who identified themselves as Hispanic or Latino on the last census. Next month, RUPCO will launch a new website where all information presented will be in both English and Spanish. So whether it’s a home repair, a first time purchase, a rental, foreclosure prevention, or some other housing need, RUPCO stands ready and able to assist! Call or click today!

A bi-lingual approach helps Woodstock Commons Superintendent Ken Brown make everyone feel comfortable.
